October was the 9th anniversary of me setting up my own business. It was 2012 – we’d just had the amazing London Olympics and celebrated the Royal Wedding with street parties up and down the country. I was at the end of maternity leave with my second child and with two queries from old clients and a reluctance to return to an agency management position, it felt right to set up on my own. It was a time of optimism in many ways: Brexit was unheard of and the last global pandemic was over a century ago.
A lot has changed in nine years! I’ve now worked with over 40 different clients, from business consultants to gym brands. I’ve launched five new food businesses, three new sporting companies, 14 schools (some for the same client if you’re wondering about the maths), six tech startups and two interior designers. There have been three retailers, two insurance companies and seven home and leisure brands. Add to that mix two fashion brands, two charities, two recruiters and two business coaches – and one travel company and one vets! – and I think it shows the fantastic mix of clients I’ve had and continue to work with. Coverage has been just as varied, ranging from The Guardian to This Morning, Forbes to Fabulous magazine.
The last 12 months have been the most challenging and yet the most rewarding as I’ve shared my peaceful office with home-schooling kids and a husband (as covered in Metro), and the whole world re-evaluated its approach to work. But PR has remained a vital communication tool for businesses of all sizes, and I’m delighted to be entering my 10th year with seven retained clients and two projects coming up, many of them long-standing and all of them great to work with.
